I agree with Utopian, but I will qualify that by saying it really depends on the mood at the time.
Yes, I agree it is an outstanding song, unlike many of the aforementioned Brent tunes and several Bobby products, but, and I say this carefully, if I'm in the mood for a rockin' show full of bounce and energy, High Time can certainly kill that quickly. As said before if I'm listening at home I will almost always let Hight Time roll over me like a comfortable blanket, but if I'm on the road and need to stay awake, HT is like a dose of Ambien the size of a Volswagen and is almost always passed on.

I would be glad to listen to any of your reccomendations to change my mind.
Nothing personal, but I just checked and still think the song sucks. From the start of the song jerrys slow paced downer notes,the odd chord progression, and the dreary lyrics- all would have me running to the bathroom if I was at a show.
High time is one of the slower songs in the deads entire catalog. While some of the balads; stella, black peter, wharf rat, even comes a time, all engage me, high time does not. (trying to think if I ever saw one live? think so?) somehow It reminds me of 'ill take a melody' by jgb. Just depressing for some reason.
Generally I like the Blistering funky jams of 77-83 dead. While i like the cream of early 70's shows, the sound at that time seems to dabble and lend more in the folk/country vibe, which is not my prefered vibe. Of course just my personal opinion, and I would not like to come off as one of those utterly annoying boo hooing soap box preachers trying to convince you of the merits, or not, of this or that.
please listen away to what you like....Just trying to explain, as requested.

Your opinions (utopian and SDH) are totally appreciated. I guess I've always just had a soft spot for the song as very few of the tunes in the Dead's live repertoire deal with heartbreak as directly (and poignantly) as High Time (to my ears at least).
5/6/81 is a very nice version that falls within your favored timespan, utopian. The whole show ain't too shabby, either.

God, I think High Time is a gem. It's sort of medieval. I might concede the live versions are hit-and-miss.

I'm listening to a "hit" right now: 8/13/91 Cal Expo. Not as good as the joyous Candyman at this show (who says only Bobby hams it up?), but this is certainly a strong High Time despite some questionable vocal harmonies. Jerry seems to be in a mid-to-slow tempo ballad mood during this set, with Sugaree, Candyman, and High Time being his only turns at the mic.

I love HT. It can be dicey live, but RH lyrics and JG arrangement make, as Ring wrote, a gem. It's one of the few sad songs that stays melancholy in words and music throughout.
